As a newbie, can you give me any advice on what is the best tool to dig out coins in grass. I have used a small garden spade, but it is too lightweight in dry ground.

the lesche is the best for digging targets in the grass , there is also one called the wilcox it is good in soft ground for deep targets , those are the only two tools I ever need , .......

This is what I've been using for a year now. Fiskars BigGrip Garden Knife.

I have the lesche but it appears to me that the one ModernDayWarrior has would do just as well. I would have tried that first if I had known about it.

I have both the Lesche and the BigGrip. The Lesche has a bit more leverage and easier on the hands, but the BigGrip is not to bad. Got mine for $5 at Target.

I use a Japanese Hori-Hori knife. very robust, has a concave blade for digging and has teeth for cutting roots.

I have a Lesche on order, I think it will be much easier to use in the centipede grass found in this part of the country
