Nice find...one other possibility no one has mentioned is the possibility that what you heard you did not find...It might have fell out of the scoop and the chain just happened to be next to it?

I thought about that after I left the spot then went back to the spot and there was 2 feet of water in the trench and it was ripping to the north. So I'll never know :)
