Not looking to sell, just want an honest opinion on the value. This was dug in an old town curbstrip last weekend and I am beyond excited, an 1879 S dollar is a rare find for around here. I keep being asked what it's worth and would just like to know myself. Thank you for looking and happy hunting!

Very nice coin! I'm no expert but I would say it worth something more than melt value (currently about $11.00) and something less than a specimen graded as very good (about $25.00). But if I had dug it, it would priceless!

Agree! If it was worth $1K I would not sell. $2k? I’d think about it. OK, I’m done, no!
That said, $35.

Edit: Congrats!

Currently can be bought at most any coin show for around $21-$22. Wholesale value? Probably around $18-$20.

I was able to buy a 10 Morgans for 17 dollars each last week, but they weren't as nice looking as yours. With it being in the ground so long, it probably has a bunch of tiny scratches that real coin collectors care about. Probably worth 20 bucks or so. If it was the first Morgan I'd ever dug, I wouldn't sell it for less than a couple hundred though!

Not selling it, my kids will get it along with the rest of my treasures when I am gone. They can whine and complain all they want then on my minor cleaning techniques on some of the coins.Thank you for all the responses though. Just wanted an idea of it's value. :hmmm:

I would think with environmental damage not much more than melt value since it's not a rare date. But for you, I'm sure it's worth a lot more.

Melt value currently $11.30, at that price I’d be ‘backing up the truck’ every day! Premiums on circulated common Morgans typically run about 100% over melt value.
