I found this item in an area where I have found a lot of colonial era items coins, shoe buckles and musket balls. I wrote it off as a window latch or some kind of furniture hardware. But there are extra holes and features that elude to having a more complex function then a simple pivoting latch. It looks to be made of brass and looks like it could be the internals to possibly a firearm or clock? Please help me ID this item.

thats what I was originally thinking but there are too many holes for a simple latch, also it has a small tooth or catch in the middle almost like a sear found in a trigger mechanism.

looks like your right, the small hole would have been the pivot point with a set pin. The large hole was the opening to allow the powder to flow and the small barb or tooth I mentioned would have hit a stationary pin to stop the moment in the closed position. I just used a pen to pin the peace in position and test the theory. Everything lines up. nice tip!

Here ya go, a couple of mine
