Celtic gold

Barryny and Alan - you have a good point! Chris M of Colchester Treasure hunting is gradually monopalising the fields around Colchester and a lot of UK detectorists are not happy. There was an article in treasure hunting magazine recently with a letter from a detectorist who had permission to detect some fields to the south west of Colchester. Chris payed the farmers for his American detectorists to use, effectively pushing out the local guys.

Yes if that's the same person I've heard about, I wouldn't trust the
provenance of anything found there. He had such a reputation that the FLOs
wouldn't record anything coming from his sites. He is in it purely to make
money out of unsuspecting tourists.

you dates just slightly out

The Gallo-Belgic A (Ambiani) gold stater. Large flan type, is dated 125-100 BC by Van Arsdell.

cracking find

Man, that is an amazing find! I fell lucky just to uncover anything besides pull tabs in my neck of the woods. That is beyond lucky!

Dont all the finds go to the british museums?:(

Only finds classified as treasure have to be declared (by law)
With non treasure finds over 300yrs old, recording is voluntary.

If something is declared to be treasure, it goes before a valuation
committee, then museums get the option to purchase it.
Usually a museum close to the find location will try to obtain it.
