if you would like to find old bottles,please go to this site and look at digging articles,this is mostly on digging privies and abanded wells,but this site is good for identifying older bottles and has many links http://www.glswrk-auction.com/ in the past I would dig older dumps behind older houses,you can find these old dumps by going behind the old house and look for glass shards on the surface,then dig until you hit clay,when you find clay you should at the bottom,then dig to the clay in all directions until you find all of the dump,unless you have found a large dump and you may not be able to dig the entire dump,also older dumps can be seen on fire insurace maps,,good luck Dave Hall,,Alton,IL.
