I want to start off telling you guys 1st that I am at the moment not much of a dirt hunter. I have been detecting for over 12 years and I used to hunt dirt a lot more when I hunted playgrounds and campgrounds when my son was in Scouts. My son got his Eagle, timed out and has been in college for nearly 2 years now. I have also become much more of a water hunter in the last few years. The reason I’m writing is that I recently had someone break into my yard and stole some power tools. The thief put the power tools in my conveniently located detecting bag that I had near my tools. Unintended collateral causalities that were inside the oilve bookbag were my Deteknix Xpointer and my Lesche. (Fortunately for me he took out 2 Deleon coils that were in the bag that occupied space that I guess he needed). The Deteknix was my 2nd pinpointer and replaced an inexpensive yellow "pistol grip" one that I had that broke. I was very happy with the Deteknix and it worked very well for the 3 years that I had it and used many times. The Lesche was my 2nd digger and replaced the Fiskars garden knife that I had for a few years. I got the Lesche because the rubber handle on the Fiskars had worn considerably and I was tired of the split blade at the tip. I am giving you the history so you can understand my background with my detecting equipment. Although I am not currently going to dig any dirt anytime soon, I did not want to be without these items as I have a brother in Georgia and may want to detect up there the next time I visit or maybe do a local playground again one day. I also did not want to spend any more money than I had to to replace my items and get some decent quality at the same time.

GP-Pointer: After going through various reviews and videos and making the “cost vs. quality vs. use” decision I bought the GP-Pointer for $39.99 and bought it through Amazon because I wanted to be able to have a return free hassle just in case. (It can be had for at least $10 cheaper on E-bay if you’re willing to wait for it a bit). I saw various reviews on it and its depth comparison to that other famous orange one and I found it to be quite comparable for my purposes. The pinpointer arrived this week and I got to say that it feels good in my hands – just like the Deteknix. It’s supposed to have IP66 water resistance and the sheath is also very good quality. I put a 9v battery in it and I am getting just over 1.5” on a quarter without “super tuning”. Which is fine as I don’t want a pinpointer that’s going to detect a quarter at 6”- isn’t that what the detector is for? I just want to be able to discern when I’m close to an item when it’s in the hole or when it’s in a pile of dirt. Unlike the Deteknix it has just 1 button and no sensitivity levels. (I prefer the one button as I used to get confused on the 2 buttons with the Deteknix). All in all, I am happy with this purchase but who knows when I’ll really have the opportunity to put it through its paces? However, I am seeing a lot of guys on here that are having issues with their $130 pinpointers so paying more doesn’t seem to be working either.

Serrated Edge Digger: After many reviews and using my “cost vs. quality vs. use” analysis I came upon this replacement for my Lesche. At under $10 it was a “no-brainer” for me. Upon taking it out of the box I noted the biggest complaint concerning it which was the green coating that dulled it. The 2nd complaint was its sheath. The sheath was cheap and thin ballistic nylon and I can see how that is not going to be durable. That’s not something I really cared about. The dullness I fixed within 5 minutes on my bench-top grinder and after a plug in my own yard I was happy with the results. I may take a Dremel to the serrated sections in the future and then it will be wickedly sharp overall but again this will not be getting as much use as my Lesche used to get. However, this digger feels as good in my hands as the Lesche and seems to be good quality regardless of the cost.
