I always thought it meant don’t deceive oneself and live under an illusion or pretense.
How unscrupulous detectorists ruin it for the rest of us.

After doing some research on it... the character that uttered those immortal words WAS referring to take care of yourself first and over the centuries that meaning has changed to the meaning we just discussed. Glad it did!

have no say in the matter.
If I catch anyone on my property, without my permission, I will
do my best to prosecute!
A simple conversation to ask permission ain't that difficult.

One more thing. Be careful who you take to your permissions. Many
will become your detecting buddy just to gain location of and/or
access to your spots.
If caught they will say you granted them permission... Chances are
you will both be banned.
