i hit the big field today that's still giving up the 1800's coins to me!
within 20 minutes of starting today, my MD found this little darling!!
at first glance, i thought it was a dime, but nope, after knocking some dirt off, it turned out to be: an 1882 Newfoundland 5 cent coin!! it's actually slightly smaller than a normal dime, but my Ace 250 sniffed it out from slightly over 6 inches deep and under a small rock in the ground!
this is the second smallest coins i've dug and probably my most valuable so far. (somewhere between $125 and $350)
the "H" mint mark (under the date) and the "dot" after the word Newfoundland indicate this coin was minted by Ralph Heaton and Sons and not at the Royal Mint in London.
it's .925 silver and only 60 thousand were made. and with that few being made, it's not considered to be a "rare" coin.
also found today (no "cleaned" pics yet): an 1854 New Brunswick One Penny (and that thing absolutely HUGE!! 33mm across!) and an 1823 Nova Scotia one penny token.
all in all, not a bad day!
thanks for looking,
Pete
