Ok. Found this on my first outing with EQ-800.

Site History: House on 1 acre fully surrounded by farmland. Dug this at approximately 6" deep approximately 30 feet away from a location where a prior building once stood. in 1977 as a kid, at the age of 6 and after, I would explore what was then a standing rectangular foundation and cement floor. I recall there was a few long pieces of angle iron, some implements which l thought were from farming operations .

later i learned the history of the house my grandparents lived in. it had been built in east central Indiana in the late 1800s to house and feed the workers that worked the gas and oil fields. knowing this now may shed some light on what this relic actually is... which at this point i can only fathom (guess) as indicated in the Title's post.

I don't have a test kit but it is not magnetic. the magnet simply slides right off. I'm assuming it is copper or brass. width = 1 5/8"

Looks too lumpy for ordinance. The hole looks tiny for an ox knob. I think it's more along the lines of something functional, like a clock weight or the ball from an old centrifugal governor or something.

The striking ball from a dinner bell?

the hole is not threaded. it is somewhat square and about an inch deep into the ball itself. the striking ball ("clapper"?) for a dinner bell actually fits well with the history of the property. in fact, the two back rooms of the house built in the late 1800s are mostly cement (floor and walls) and both have drains in the floor. there was a meat processing hook which hung in one of the rooms when i was a child. i suppose this was where meat was processed for the oil and gas workers.

i actually have a bell but not the clapper.... i'm loving this find already.

if anyone has any other thoughts or questions i'd love to keep the inquiry going a bit.

i'll research the Ox knob or a Gate Valve suggestions to see if anything clicks there.

https://www.prindlestation.com/Dinner-bell-p/f-1-bell.htm this is the style of dinner bell i have (missing the clapper). not exactly the same style of clapper but who knows...
