I've an idea and was wondering if anyone has tried it or, anyone has the materials to do so.
When I first started working, I used dye penetrate to inspect for flaws on cast helicopter parts. It would find cracks etc that you could not see with the naked eye. I wonder if the dye penetrent process would reveal those "invisible" details we often look for on for instance, 1800's LC's etc.
Anyone try it? Anyone have access to the required materials?

Interesting idea. There must be something you can do (after you clean it) to really help some of the details stand out...like powder or something. Does anyone have any suggestions or hints?

I think I read somewhere that serial numbers on an engine block that have been ground off with a surface grinder can be recovered due to the fact that when the numbers are struck it changes the molecular structure of the material beyond the depth of the imprint. It's a big deal in the numbers matching vintage car world. Law enforcement uses a similar techniques on firearms. I have no idea how or what technique is used.
