They work great if your pin pointing is excellent and you are in an area devoid of pebbles or stones. If the area has buried stones ... forget it.

cut the end off a caulk gun to reinforce end put a ring around it and attach with epoxy, solder or weld. Sharpened and you have a plugger. Ice

Ya, I don't think that one of those would be very practical at most all of the places that I dig.
