Plate / buckle ID help please

Hello,

I found this guy in my back yard today and I was hoping someone could help me identify it. It looks similar to Indian War belt plates I have seen online, but the letters look a bit different. It also looks like it had black paint on it at one time, but that may just be corrosion. Possibly a toy or reproduction?

Well , holy cow , looky there . I can't say it is , but wouldn't that be cool to start pulling Civil War stuff outta your back yard !! I hope its real , instead of a repro . Somebody here can help you out on it . I'll keep my fingers crossed for you .

That plate was adopted by the military in 1873, I think. But the year is close, it is post civil war.
