I went swinging today at my site close to home and dug a really toasted nickel of some kind...a crotal bell ...a thimble and this item that is approx. 2 inches long and looks like there could have been a hinge on the back.Is does have a clear U.S. stamped on it and it is from the site that I dug a U.S. buckle from a few years ago.Any help would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the blurry backside picture.

I think it's Civil War era, but not directly linked to the Civil War. It's a brass keyhole cover plate from a padlock

Definitely a key hole cover but i'm thinking more Victorian than Civil War.
