Gun Part or Just Door/Furniture Hardware?

Today’s find in a field in Western Connecticut is made of brass (?). It is ornate and not symmetrical. At first I thought door lock hardware but looking at the way it’s shaped it reminds of me of some type of a lock plate or side plate from a gun? I have no idea so I’m just taking a wild guess here.

Looks a lot like a door handle, don't know what that hole in the middle is, maybe a key hole?

It's a piece from a brass candle snuffer, most likely from the first half of the 19th century.
