Weird Ring

I found my third ring today in a school yard that dates back to right after the civil war. I’m most concerned about what the material of this ring is because I thought it was copper till I cleaned it and saw gold shining in the holes. I’m curious if it could be a low karat gold possibly. I’ve found a lot of gold plated items in the past and this doesn’t strike me as gold plating. It looks part of the ring. I can’t find any markings on the ring and I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s missing the stone as well. Any information would be greatly appreciated and if you need any more pictures or info just ask.

Seems pretty heavy so might be gold.
Next is doing a density measurement using Archimedes Method (google it). This works well for gold.

The brownish coating looks odd.

If it is gold or even gold plated, Navel Jelly removes crud easily without damaging the gold.

Well done on the ring, looks old.

Possible ring copper alloy and the remnants of gilding still showing?

Thanks I’ll look into that!

That’s what I was thinking just it doesn’t seem to be flakey gold like most gilding I see.

This is a leather belt/harness mount where you can still see the gilding in the crevice's?

Found in June 2012.

Yeah I’m starting to think that’s all it is. I saw that little gold and got excited and wanted to hear some opinions. Thanks!

Following this post as I've got a similar situation with a ring like this.

I believe it is just copper because the density was much closer to copper than gold. I would love to see pics of yours if you feel like posting.

That clearly is or was a finger ring.

Which to me looks burned. As it was in some kind of fire. Why the fake stone is melted and the guilding is gone.

With this type of setting, modeling and materials i would say somewere in the latest 100 to 150 years max.

Here is mine. Different design but similar metal I believe.

That's not a gold ring...

Yeah I came to that conclusion. When I first saw it I was curious if it could be a copper/gold alloy or something with just a small amount of gold but I believe it was just leftover gilt.

I was actually wondering the same thing on weather or not it was in a fire.

Thanks for posting! I’m still curious if mine is a mixture of metals or if it was in a fire and caused the colouring to change a bit. I’ve never seen copper come out of the ground quite the same color as my ring.

Cool ring. Congrats on the find.
