circa 1971 I found a silver dime from the 1890's at what I guess was an abandoned train station in the Bronx.
My dad took it and I never saw it again.
Since then I have always wanted to try my luck, me and an ex girlfriend once went with her detector - we went to a park in San Francisco and found a few dollars in loose change under a swing set but she was to self conscious to be comfortable detecting in public so we never went back.
I do not know anything at all about metal detecting ( or gunsmithing, just an online handle) but this place seems like the way to get started.
