1776 copper???

Found a coin that doesn't appear to be perfectly round...possibly hand forged. It has a substantial amount of corrosion,however, I can read United States and I believe it says 1776.
I'm not even certain it is copper.

Any suggestions on what to do with this? How to clean so that we can see what it really says?
