Alright guys and gals. My buddy made a great find. We think we have a date range but there is a big mystery about this coin. Where there should be an “AN” it looks like there are some numbers. These coins were dated with “AN-12” or “XI...” Anybody got a guess as to this coins mintage year? Here are some photos for clues.

I have five franc with the same Roman numerals and it's a 1803. The five was the largest value in French silver at that time. The next value up, the ten fanc was a gold coin. Congrats!

Thanks for the info but I’m looking for details about this coin specifically. Where the AN should be located I see what look like numbers of 15 or 13. Trying to find out if there was a variant of these or if the coins wear is playing tricks on my eyes. My buddies and I have found 4 1 francs, 1-5 franc and 1-20 franc. Still need that elusive 10 franc for quadfecta.

I think what your seeing is a well worn AN which is 18. The other two digits wether it was Roman numerals or otherwise looks comletely worn off. To help date it the verbiage on the obverse I think was changed somewhat after Nepolian's passing. A Google search will help with that.

Gotta concur with Kweis, well worn AN with the numbers completely gone. Congratulations on the great find.

I can't help you with a date, but just want to chime in with : " I LOVE IT "! That is so cool to have popped up in a CA gold rush setting. Quite a historical testament to the people-groups who rushed to the CA gold rush at that time.

I've found several of those too. Not sure if that's because French people were necessarily emigrating here, or that simply their coinage was.

Nice find ! Good to see some CA action (who needs those pesky LC's anyhow, eh ? :sissyfight: )
