I'm getting the following information from Albert's button book. On page 34 he calls your button the Great Coat button. The first evidence of them being produced was in 1820. They were still being made as late as 1839. If you can read the backmark, I may be able to tie your date down a bit better. Very nice find indeed.

Back of great coat button

The back says United States with crust on united and little dots around the shank here is a better pic and pic of another button I found

Cool button buddy. I dug one of those about 20 years ago. Mine didn't have the shank. Mexican war. Nice
