I haven't found an identifier yet (who's navy and rank), but I did find an identical one online: https://external-content.duckduckgo....6pid%3DApi&f=1

thanks Rock Jock. i found a few more. for what i have seen the stars are merchant marine 4th class petty officer or midshipman, something like that. still the age. some research on back, the shank looks pressed so 19th century at least. a lot say Superior quality . it does say faintly made in England, which is button capital of the world i think.

Hey Dixie Digger, I think you have a US Merchant Marine academy cadet button: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/wh...e-england.html
Not an exact match to yours, but darn close! Not sure the age of it unfortunately, but probably no earlier than civil war era. I'm no expert, just my observations based on what I have read while researching this particular button. Awesome relic!

thanks folks. i do believe it is merchant marine. button books are quite expensive so been scouring the used book store chains for a reasonable one. but i know it takes several different ones for accurate ID there are so many buttons.
