I use a screwdriver...that thing will pick right through compacted gravel/clay like really good! Once you get the first piece picked out, a little hole, you are popping the sides out and on down to your target!

Sharpened at tip stainless rod, with a golf ball as the handle at other end.

I got a good dime reading in a gravel parking lot of a school. I picked the hard packed gravel out one at a time with my Hori-Hori knife until I finally found a Mercury at a little over three inches. There was dirt under the gravel and it was in good shape. A lot better than I expected. It think it took almost half an hour to reach it.
