An update on the Roman Lantern which was found, and very carefully excavated.

It was picked up by Finds Liaison Officer Faye Minter, and is now in the hands of Bury St Edmunds County Council Archaeology Service. Faye says it is a very rare find, especially in such good condition. It is of a type thought to be previously unknown in this country, and could possibly be associated with a burial.
The lantern is now going to Ipswich museum for X-Ray and further analysis.

Here is a picture of a similar lantern.... Click here ...

Interesting Alan, if it is unique, is the museum likely to keep it? RickO

I expect a museum will get it once it has gone through the treasure system.
Probably Bury St Edmunds museum as that's the closest to the find site, although if it's unique, the British Museum would like to get their hands on it.

He'll probably do quite well from the find, but I haven't a clue what it's worth.
Probably not a vast fortune.

Thanks for the update Alan, it's good to see that such a rare find is being carefully examined by those trained to do so. Knowing that it will be put on display in a museum for all to appreciate is also a good thing. Nice to know that the finder will be compensated.
