So today I had probably my best hunt ever. I started looking at my neighborhood in the old 1900 GIS topographical map. I found an intersection near my neighborhood where there was an old church that sat on the corner. (See the first picture.) That area is now the common area of a larger neighborhood owned by the homeowners association and covered in trees. Apparently people like to dump their grass and leaves there, too. So decided to go and hunt it today. I only had about an hour and a half to hunt but man was it worth it.

My first hole I dug was an Indian Head Penny. My second hole I dug was an Indian head penny. I've then dug some melted pieces of lead and continued on my way. By the end of the day I pulled out four Indian Head pennies, part of a change purse, and old 1870s token from the Brunswick company, a strange piece of lead with some letters on it, a button, and my first gold ring.

The pennies are dated 1870, 1874, 1874, and 1880. I've pulled a total of 4 ihps before today, and got 4 in less than 90 mins. I did not pull one modern coin.

The little lead piece is interesting, I can clearly read L E. On it, but the rest is difficult to see. Not sure what it was, but it came out white like a civil war bullet would.

The button has a light floral pattern on it, but it is very hard to see.

The trade token is from the j.m. Brunswick & balke co, the back reads "good for 5c in trade". That company name was used between 1874 and 1879. The image on the front is a billiards table. Also my first trade token.

I found the part to a change purse and got very excited, but only found one of the ihps there. But, about 5 feet away I got a mid 50s signal, on the surface. Brushed away the leaves and barely beneath the surface was my first ever gold (plated) ring. This thing is tiny, maybe a kid's ring? It is marked 18k on the inside. Seems like it would be from a similar era as everything else. (Forget I said anything, it's plated)

Well...I'll be going back there again!!! I've found some good stuff before, but never as much old, good finds in such a short period of time ( and never a gold ring)

Nice hunt. I thought I had a gold ring today, but got skunked. Looked good in the hole, marked 18k, but plated!

Great hunt, definitely got some dandy finds! I love injuns, but the gold seals the deal!

Congrats on the IHPs and the relics. Hate to say this, but from your pics that ring looks to be plated and not solid gold. Maybe post up a few more pics of it and see what others have to say.

DAMMIT! I went back and looked closer. . . it is plated.

I blame you.

This one came out of the dirt with a nice crust of brown dirt on it. I was able to scratch all of the dirt off with my fingers and some water. It had one dent in it. I went back a looked again, and that dent isn't really a dent. . . it's a chip.

NO! Worst hunt ever!!!

I'm sorry. It's happened to all of us if you've been in this for any amount of time. Real gold won't be crusted with dirt...dirt will only stick in small crevices. If the ring's finish is smooth, it will almost always come out clean.

Ah, good to know. Thanks. I still blame you, but thanks. Would you mind planting some real gold in my permissions to make me feel better? :)

Ouchkabibble on the fake gold though! Happens to all of us! Your Golden day is coming...you just keep working it Buddy! Hey thanks for the nice detailed post and the pics...
