Pennies through 1981 are copper. Pennies since 1983 are zinc. 1982 pennies could be either, since they changed the composition in the middle of 1982. Copper pennies are worth about 2 1/2 cents each for their copper content.

Nickels with a big letter above the dome (P, D, or S) contain silver and are worth about 75 cents in silver melt value.

Dimes and quarters through 1964 are silver. Dimes and quarters since 1965 are mostly copper. Silver coins are worth about 10 times their face value just for the metal content.
