I had the opportunity to detect a pounded park yesterday close to me in Virginia where I live which had a NY regiment encampment back in the day. This was my first relic hunting dig of the season with a buddy of mine. After 5 hours of only digging can slaw, aluminum cans, pull tabs and wire I decided to head into the narrow strip of woods that butted up against some houses.
After 15 minutes in this area I got a good hit on my XP Deus solid 72/74 and I was thinking button all the way. After digging a plug 4-6 inches I was staring at the back side of a two-piece dome button, and I was thinking I had dug a General Service Artillery button as I saw the faint “A” in the center. Ok I’m not skunked I thought! Only 30 minutes later when I got some water I decided to gently clean the button did I see the very discernible letters surrounding the button: Mississippi; I had just dug my first Mississippi “A” Artillery button with perfect shank and HYDE GOODRICH N.O. (New Orleans) backmark.
Although my only target of the day in 6 hours plus of digging-that button sure made up for the lack of finds in my pouch lol. This is my first Reb button of the year and Lord willing will not b my last. The good Lord allowed me to recover this highly sought after button. Happy digging diggers!
