This cave was used to mine saltpeter in the 1800's. We found bullets, lead, modern buttons, and we found a mason jar with the lid intact that was buried. There are numerous old homesites dating to the 1800's all around the surrounding mountains that we have yet to search. All that remains of the structures are the chimneys.

Symbol

Btw, What is the first pic supposed to say? Having trouble making it out.

I think it says 'James H Redman; this _____ 31 day of; July 1864'.

Anyone know of any books that explain old symbols or maybe know someone that would know what this means?

looks like butterflies..... I heard when I was a kid growing up it Knoxville that there were tunnels running under down town K-town.. with possible entrances via The Tennessee & Rivera theaters. Do you know anything about those tunnels?

Knoxville sits on a large deposit of limestone. Some of the caves in Knoxville were used in the Underground Railroad. There are caves all under Knoxville that the river helped carve out. There is suppose to be a cave that goes under the Tennessee River itself, but I have yet to find it.
