I've only dug one single Standing Liberty Quarter. I was just looking at a post by WyoTom showing off his second one dug. Is it just me, or are they a really hard find? I've dug many Barber Quarters. Hell, I've even dug more Barber Halves and Seated Dimes than I have Standing Liberty Quarters. They are a beautiful design. I think they are nice to look at even when worn slick like mine.

Post your SLQs here in this thread. I'd love to see them.

Ya know , now that you mention it, you're right : I've dug LOTS more seated dimes than standing quarters. More barber halves that standing quarters. That's strange now that you mention it. Since in each case, the Standing quarter is newer. Not sure if the mintage statistics bear this out or not.

And yes: The standing quarter is up there with the Mercury dime for the "pretty contest" !

This one from last year is a mess, but I was thrilled. It was in an area where some dirt was pushed around after an outbuilding was torn down.

Got this one in a pounded site with the F5, really worn but I’ll take it.

I found mine by dumb luck just a few weeks ago .. I was testing my tornado coil for the first time near a creek on my in-laws property and this was in the creek about 8 inches. Needless to say I’m not allowed to hunt on their property anymore [emoji1787][emoji1787]

I have found 14 of them and they are pretty elusive. I average one of them every 140 or so silver coins. Here is a pic of a couple chopped ones I've found.

Still looking for my first SLQ. One of the first quarters I found was a Barber. Same thing with dimes. But a SLQ has eluded me.

Yes the elusive SLQ. I have been dedicated to metal detecting the last 4 years, and have found two, 1919 and a1925. Both of these within the last 2 years.Which is kind of odd because I have found over a half dozen seated quarters. You would think it would be easier to find an SLQ.

I've got way more barbers and Washington's too. I only have 2 Standers since I've been at it, one was slick, and the other 1928 which I finally crossed off the list last year. They were inches apart, likely from the same drop. Been hoping for my 3rd all this year, but just barbers and Washington's

As far as mintage:

Seated: 155,498,956 (53 years, through 1891) US POP in 1891 was approx 64 million--2.4 per person
Barber: 264,670,792 (25 years, through 1916) US POP in 1916 was approx 100 million-- 2.6 per person
SLQ: 226,770,400 (15 years, thorough 1930) US POP in 1930 was 123 million--1.8 per person

The short life span and relatively smaller mintage seems to explain why they don't turn up much.

I'm curious to know if banks routinely pulled the worn/dateless coins out of circulation, thus slowly dwindling the population of coins in circulation.

Either way, my guess is that once the Washington quarter was announced all of the SLQs in halfway decent shape were recognized for their collectible value and socked away. That left the worn coins to circulate (and occasionally get dropped) along with the Washington quarters until they were horded for silver value along with the rest of the silver coins.

I found this one a few years back February as the weather broke for a few days where in Wisconsin. Glad I took the time get out found a key date 1921. Congratulations on your SLQ.

That was a few years back in February and when the weather broke. Was typing without my glasses 🙄

For me, the title of this thread may as well be “The Elusive Quarter, Period”! In my 3 years of detecting, I’ve found a grand total of 8 silver quarters, all GWs except one Barber and one Seated. Absolutely no Standing Liberties - it’s pretty much my White Whale at this point!

Tyler, first congrats on digging yours. Over the years I have been pretty lucky with getting the coil over a few of these rare coins. In the 11 years in this hobby I may have dug about 20 with about half being slick. Regardless the condition to me it is the best designed U.S. minted regular issued coin ever. This is my only one from this year so far. Trapper

I've found two, one with a date and one without but my FIL found the ultimate key date. I own it now as I bought it from him. I was there when he found it and couldn't let him sell it off.

Only two SLQ, but no Barber Qtrs!! One SQL was where an old large tree was removed. The other was in a trashy silver area deep about 10” down in a park. My favorite finds. You just never know when!
