With the temperature being a whopping 71 degrees, I managed to get out and search a field along the Connecticut river. While I found a lot of old square nails, a rail tie, and a horse shoe, three things stood out as my best finds to date.

First, a 1864 Indian Head penny! Woohoo! Its in terrible shape, but enough is left for me to identify it.

Second, I found a silver plated Hat pin from between 1880 and 1910 (though they started making them in 1850, I doubt its that old) from Scovill Manufacturing Company, CT. It has three letters on the front (L.A.W.) that I assume are initials. I found it on a hiking trail which led up a mountain to an old mid 1800s house, which was later a ski and vacation hotel!

Third, I found a silver plated spoon by Wm. A. Rogers, which appears to be a 'Tipped pattern set 1879' simple spoon. Yay for actually finding things!

Thanks for the clear, up close photos! Congrats. I still haven't found my first IHP lol.

Very nice set of finds! Looks like you've found a great hunting area.

Nice digs. Love finding Indianheads! That pin is very intriguing! Notice the wings, in propeller arrangement, set on an airplane grill. The design looks very early aviation period. I could not Google up another like it. Very rare. It certainly is related to some kind of aviation, but don't know if it would be military, or commercial, etc. The l.a.w. lettering might be a clue, and not personal initials? You ought to post that pin in the Help ID Finds forum. Would like to learn about that one.

The Pin is very interesting. When it first came up it was completely covered in mud and I didn't waste time trying to clean it in the field. I figured it was some modern fake jewelry piece, but still nice. I only realized what it was when I got home! I have also spent quite a while looking online to identify it, the closest I came was to identify the maker and years they produced the items, and state it was made in. Whatever it is, it appears to be a custom make, perhaps with someones initials on it? I'll re-post it in the Help ID section to see what anyone else can figure out about it. :)

For over 5 years I have been hunting an IH with no success. A few months ago a woman was asking me about detecting and asked me to demonstrate. So I took a machine to the curb in front of her house and said we might find a penny or two. Immediately I got a penny signal up against the sidewalk, barely covered by sand. I picked it up and handed it to her. She looked at it and said “ COOL! 1887!”

I had found my first IH and had given it away.
