Possible 1887 dog tax?

So my girlfriend and I just got back from a small road/detecting trip to Michigan's upper peninsula and along the way we saw some sidewalk tearouts in Ashland, Wisconsin so we hit them. Not much at all but I did find a very cool old tag from 1887 laying on the surface. My first thought was a dog tax tag but they usually say that on them, don't they? Any info or help from someone more knowledgeable on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

It would not be unusual to find a pre-1900 dog tag, I have found a couple myself

I doubt that it is though, because all the tags I have seen will list either the town or county or state.
These are from 1883, 1888 and 1898

I have no doubt the tag is from 1887, that's not what I was wondering about, it was underneath a sidewalk for who knows how long and pretty crusty looking when I found it.

Hmm, good guesses but sure wish I knew for sure. I would think it would have something else though if it were any of those or dog tax?

Nice finds there man, I was actually thinking about yours when I found this being that I was is Wisconsin at the time.

Since you found it in Wisconsin, you will be invoiced the tax accordingly :lol:
