The weather was wonderful here on Sunday, but I was too busy with family stuff to get out for any detecting during the day. But since the skies were clear and the moon was full, I decided to take the opportunity and squeeze in a night hunt at the farmer's field/ghost town I've been spending most of my detecting time on this season. It was after sunset by the time the girls were in bed and I could sneak out, and the moon was well up and by the time I made it onto the site.
I've only detected at night a couple times, and all just this year - I've gotta admit, my eyes are showing their age! I really struggled on those previous night hunts - every time I popped on the machine's backlight, or even the LED on the pinpointer, my dark adaptation went back to square one, so I felt like I was constantly stumbling around half-blind! Old eyes just take longer to re-adapt - just ask my poor dog how many times I've tripped over him while trying to cross the bedroom to get into bed just after shutting out the lights lately
Anyways, no such problems with that big, gorgeous full moon! The temperature dropped fast as the night got later, but I sure could see like it was practically daylight And that beautiful silvery moonlight transferred over to my finds, too - among several keepers was a nicely detailed 1905 Barber dime! Also pulled out a "Princess Pat" rouge compact lid most likely from the 1930s, and an interesting old Carhartt button. Not sure on it's age, but all of the similar examples I've found all have "Overalls" abbreviated as "O'ALLS"...this one has it spelled out completely.
The other interesting find is what seems like a token with an odd "sunburst" or "gear" shape. I haven't found anything yet that makes sense for F.E.C. that would fit the timeframe for the location, and don't know how the "181" relates either.
Looks like I'm gonna be circling the full moon dates on the calendar from now on and crossing my fingers for clear skies!
