Default Compact and Button?

Just returned from a vacation in Eastern North Carolina where I found these two items.

The larger of the two might be a compact lid? As I pulled it out of the ground, it appeared that there was a thin circular ring on the inside about 1/16th of an inch wide. It flaked out as I was cleaning it and I'm not sure if it was actually part of the object or just dirt that had compressed.

The second object seems to be a button as you can see an attachment point on the back where a shank would have gone. However, it is very thin and rather large for a button. Any ideas what it may have gone to?

That's what I was thinking, a back plate from a pocket watch.

Pocket watch back.
Scrub hard and you should find at least a name and probably some numbers on the inside.
On some brands you can track the date using those numbers.

It looks to me like there may be a word/name in the middle of the first item.
