Found in War of 1812 area

this was found a foot down in a war of 1812 area. Whole thing is metal including the circular bottom with the cross. It has two circular knurled knobs, one of them cannot be seen in the pictures its on the bottom.

looks like some kind of measuring device?

what is it?

Looks like a weighted ships depth sounder transducer. I see the green copper corrosion. Possible the round spoked wheel like part could be made of bronze to keep sea water creatures and algae from attaching to it. As this metal would be toxic to them.

That's my guess.

I posted your picture elsewhere. It was suggested it was an small electromagnet. For picking up scrap metal.....they come in all shapes and sizes.
