That I hate having to go ANYWHERE

When it gets close to Thanksgiving, I seriously despise having to go "out" for anything. Roads packed, stores crowded, everyone is acting "joyous" (lol, not).

So I try and stock the pantry, fridge, and freezer to keep me going until after New Year, when it's once again safe to venture out.

I headed to SprawlMart at 4:30AM, filled my basket to overflowing. Go up front to pay.....guess what, they don't have any cashiers....not ONE. So, I find someone and tell them they can get someone to ring me up, or someone to put back everything in my basket. They got someone to ring me up.

I spent well over $300, and unless they want to discount my purchase, I'm not going to pay full price to give them my business when I'm doing some of the work.

I'll go through the self checkout with a couple things, but not a cart full.

Come on New Years..........

ETA: Bah Humbug!

…...if you want to stock up till after New Years then next time just go shopping with one of these super jumbo shopping carts :laughing::laughing:

With the movement toward a $15/hour minimum wage, I think you'll see more of this. The supermarkets near me are already increasing the number of self checkouts, with a corresponding decrease in cashiers.

P.S. Since I don't drive, I use the delivery service, so it could already be like you describe at the grocery store and I wouldn't know it.

Most major supermarkets and department stores around where I live have mainly self serve checkouts, and only a few cashiers. I guess they're replacing cashiers with self serve machines to save labour.

"Service" used to be something business was proud of, now it more like a cattle-chute to move you out as cheaply as possible. Ringing-up and bagging your own groceries should get the buyer a discount. Instead, it's full price, and the store keeps the additional money not paid a Cashier.

Someone else picking my food wouldn't work for me, as I'm one who grabs stuff from the back of the shelves, with a longer expiration date ;)

Really funny thing, 1st thing this AM, when I walked into WM just before 5AM, was a couple working LP thinking they were keeping an eye on me. I came so close to telling them they weren't as inconspicuous as they thought they were. They probably figured it out by my audible laughter.

LOL, I do seriously dislike the Holidays, and am more than glad when they're done and over.

I spent 14 years in the retail trade and I came close to despising the holidays. People get MEAN when you can not hand them the item that they want. People wait until a week before Christmas to demand that you order an (sold out) item for them and get it in before Christmas. When you can not produce the item their response turns the air dark blue. I have been called every name that one could ever imagine by people who wanted an item that was not available anywhere.

 …….especially when occasionally you can even find outdated stuff still on the shelves !
(I've even bought packaged cheese within the "sell by" date and it still had mold when I opened it up !)

I saw stuff in WM today that expired a week ago.

I used to live near Dayton, OH, was in a Kroger there shopping once, and I was on a pot pie kick. I scooped-up an armload of pies, and noticed one when I put them on the register.

The box was extremely worn and ragged. I looked at the date, and it had expired over 3 years prior

I showed it to the Cashier and told her she might want to toss that one away. She acted like it was no big deal.

 …...I might have emailed or called the pot pie company customer service, they might have contacted the store manager and sent you some coupons too. Those companies want to know if there is a problem with quality control, and leaving a pot pie on the shelf for 3 years definitely can have an effect on quality control

Wasn't worth it. I'd been shopping some here at Kroger, using their "rewards" card for fuel points. LOL, they're fuel was always higher than everyone else, so by the time you'd accumulated enough points to get a 10cent discount, you were paying "regular" price from other stations. Just a method to track your shopping/spending habits.

I buy chicken quarters in 10 pound bags, generally 2 at a time, grill them, and strip, weigh, and vacuum seal for the freezer. The chicken I was getting from Kroger was "mangled", like it had been caught in a machine and torn apart.

I complained to Kroger, nothing changed. It had actually slipped my mind, and guess what.....I buy more, same torn-up mess.

Well, my second email to Kroger on the same topic wasn't so nice, and I told them where they could put their chicken and fuel points card, and that I'd never spend another penny in their store. This was also after complaining of cockroaches, including pointing out a 3" monster to a store employee.

A store has to be bad, when you consider going to WalMart an "upgrade"

I'm likely to go back to PigglyWiggly for a while.

It’s because they think we are cattle, but I refuse to use a self-serf checkout, never have in the last twenty years.

We might only get to a Walmart roughly once every 6 weeks or so as there are none close by and even then it is usually only to stock up on certain items that are too pricey in our smaller local stores in our small town.

I will say after hearing about your "fun" at Kroger's that it makes me more thankful for our local grocery store "BiLo", they are not perfect but they do have great customer service and will gladly make things right if there is a problem. They will happily reimburse you if something scans at the wrong price and I've even had a few times where they even gave me free product because of a pricing or checkout mistake they made.

They have a customer satisfaction survey on the bottom of each receipt that when you fill it out online it gives you a $5.00 off $40 or more coupon good on your next shopping, so that along with their 5% off on Wednesdays for those 55 and over makes for extra savings. (I mostly shop the sale items each week, especially the "buy one get one free" stuff )

I have to disagree..

At least in the summer, you get double points for shopping on the weekends, and quadruple points for Kroger Brand stuff.. I hardly buy anything, but I shop on weekends and buy their brand because it's cheaper..

This Thanksgiving, I'm treating the whole Family to a dinner out! Including the visiting Inlaws! Open Menu! Order whatever you want! .... Yeah I'm a generous host, and after 40 years together, the Wife could use a break from cooking a big meal!

I've found a Great local Restaurant called "Sams Club"!!!...In the Spirit of the Season, I figure once a year I can afford it! Probably set me back $20 or so, All those Hotdogs add up!...but at least no dishes to do..! Plus, I can get a new set of tires installed during the Dinner!:laughing:

More power to ya :D

I shop through the week to avoid the weekend crowds (just like fishing). SprawlMart is open all night (so I can go any time), Kroger isn't.

I've tried some of Kroger brand stuff, their sour cream has the consistency of ketchup. Been a couple other things, but can't recall what they were.

Just wasn't worth it for me.

 at the rest of you goobers

Where the heck is gas $1.79 a gallon!!! My whole adult life I’ve never paid less then $1.89 a gallon in Cali. Cali is the problem obviously. Going east the price drops the closer you get to Texas and the South.
