detect anywhere within 1/2 to 1 mile of the Mississippi River, as they (NPS) are creating Mississippi River National Park.

It will be a major tourist trap. A corporation has taken over Memphis parks near the Mississippi. St. Paul, MN agreed to participate as they were told it would get them many tourists. The Ford plant has closed and the building demolished. Now Riverview school has been closed. Around Minneapolis-St. Paul metro, they have painted over the area they call part of the park on internet map, even though they don't own most of the land yet.

This is for real, so I encourage you to detect near the Mississippi River, soon, if you still can do so legally.

Louisville: most older parks are now under control of a corporation that is trying to get tourism by bragging they have so many parks that involved famous park architect Frederic Law Olmsted. They decided to ban detecting in every park in Louisville, rather then some banned & some legal. Go in to a Louisville Olmsted park & you'll be told no detecting, but would you like to help fix up the park & make a donation? Is Ohio River National Park next?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but just trying to say if you can still detect near the Mississippi River, best do in soon. Best wishes, George (MN)

Corporations should not own or control over something people have a god-given right to. This is wrong!

There's difference between own and manage. I hate to see parks made off limits to detecting. But, the government has and probably will always be notorious for mismanagement. There are many examples of private companies who have stepped in to take over the management of public parks in which the public would rarely, if ever use, because they were in such bad shape. Although the cities still charged taxes, they failed to maintain the park. The private management company came in, found sponsors who paid to advertise in the park and made the park usable again. The government always able to take back control if obligations weren't met by the private companies.
