Wow, probably from the British 65th Regiment of Foot stationed in NZ from 1846 to1865, fighting in the Maori Wars.

Possibly, although their regimental badge had tiger in it. Might have been an enlisted soldier's shako plate. THose were of simpler design.

Here's a similar one for the 62nd regiment apparently dug from the Crimean War.

Nice find. What you have here is an Other Ranks 1844 Pattern Shako Plate for the 65th Regiment of Foot.
This example is from a battalion or centre company, the grenadier and light companies (flank companies) having a smaller regimental number surmounted by a flaming grenade or strung bugle respectively.
These were reserved for dress occasions, the soft forage cap being worn in the field. But it is still nice to see a complete example.
If you are ever looking to sell this, I would be interested, as I have a small collection of 65th Regiment items.
