These are not my finds, rather they have been posted on a local history Facebook page. I have included known details in hopes of helping ID them

There is an indentation on top. It seems to be iron. (A magnet sticks to it.) There are several circles (1 1/8" diameter) visible in the surface, as well as a ridge running around the circumference dividing it into two hemispheres. It weighs about 8 lbs.

This guy found a 4" iron ball in his neighbor's yard around 19th and Cumberland, using a metal detector. It was buried 14 inches underground. We did measure it with a ruler, and it was pretty close to 4 inches diameter.

Any help would be appreciated.

You will need precise measurements with a set of calipers and weigh it with a postage scale to determine if it's an actual cannon ball or something else like a milling ball, or gate weight.

Is that a wood or lead plug in the side? If so, it may be a loaded, live shell.

Would a milling ball or gate weight have the circles op described? do agree about measurements etc. hh
