Any idea how old this buckle is ? I found it underwater and can’t believe it’s still intact.

Beautiful colonial buckle you found there blacksambellamy.
It's in good condition too. I'm jealous......

What’s crazy is I found it underwater. Hard to believe it lasted so long

The shorelines along bays and rivers can be loaded with artifacts. Many of the early settlements that were once located along the shore are now partially underwater. There are guys around here that use boats and hunt the shallow waters around colonial sites along the Chesapeake Bay and they have good success.

In some cases, being underwater and mud where there is very little oxygen can help preserve artifacts.

Circa 1720 to 1770. If you check out page 101 in this link, you will see the tongue and chape from your buckle pictured there.

Thank you for this, I identified my find by this thread! lol So rewarding when you solve the "puzzle"!

This beautiful piece was found at about 8" on the salty shores of Mahone Bay NS. Pics are before and after cleaning!
