My daughter recently joined the Navy so I needed a new hobby. Since the house is silent, I bought an Ace 400 2 weeks ago after a few months of reading and watching videos. Today I went out for the first time on my parents property in Orange Co., VA. Ten minutes after I got there I found this 1838 dime and a hair clip or something. I found a rack of other bullets and coins that are modern. I live in a great area for the hobby in Fredericksburg VA but I'm thinking gaining permission won't be easy.

Also, what is the best way to clean coins? I just had to rinse this under water. It was in about 2" of moss and looked this when it came out. I'm excited...hope I didn't blow my load on my first time out

Welcome from central MA! You did the right thing, just a gentle rinse with water, any key date coins be especially careful with, microscopes can see the tiniest scratches...congrats on a GREAT find, im in my 6th season and I don't have a US silver that old! Awesome start!

Welcome from the Texas Hill Country. I am so jealous that you found a Seated on your first day. It took me many many years to get my first Seated coin. Congrats on your silver and keep hunting that place. I am sure there are more goodies out there for you.

Congrats on your first Seated Liberty Dime! That's an amazing find, especially for your first time out! Beautiful condition, too.

P.S. :fmdfwelcome:

Wow, can you say Beginner’s Luck ???!
It took me maybe 10 years in the hobby before I found my first Seated Liberty coin it was a very worn 1875 quarter. Your dime is in super nice condition. Something that nice, don’t go overboard cleaning; the water rinse looks more that adequate. And try not to rub the dirt and mud off a silver coin right after finding it. You don’t know what value is hiding under the dirt till you give it at least a gentle rinse at home.
Oh, and welcome from Boston. Great first outing !

Jim

WOW, what a GREAT FIRST FIND !!!Congratulations and welcome from Kansas and Antiques Detectors.

Thanks everyone. I was hoping you weren't going to say it was so great of a find. I'll be chasing that first high for some time it sounds like. Thanks for the advice on cleaning as well!

Nice find!! Believe it or not, I have hundreds of hours in the field and have never found a single silver coin.

Congrats on that silver coin, wow, 180 years old to boot!
Gonna be hard to top that one, but good luck -
