Laser Inscribed Diamonds and theft?

Now that diamonds can be inscribed with unique lot numbers and
a lost diamond ring is likely to be reported "stolen" to the insurnance
company, does anyone worry about being charged with theft?

There is also a flip side. There is an opportunity to return a ring to
it's rightful owner.

Good point....from my reading and some knowledge of the Gem trade I believe this is not common practice with your run of the mill, chain store jewellery shop bought diamond rings. Usually reserved for Diamonds of Reasonable size and quality which unfortunately we do not tend to find with enough regularity to worry us too much.....
