Which Is The Better Detector For Searching For Good Targets In A Bed Of Nails?

Wow, it's amazing how bent out of shape some people get. You'd think that after over 20 years in construction I'd get used to the d**k swinging and pissing contests, but sometimes it's still amazing...:wow::laughing:

There could be many reasons for your new finds.

EMI was reduced when you discovered your new targets.

A coin could turn ever so slightly off of edge for whatever reason.

You just got your coil centered over it.

You approached from the right angle.

You had the ideal coil sweep speed.

You had better settings for that day.

Ground moisture.

Grass or weeds height.

Your concentration was better.

Ain't this what makes detecting fun!!

I think it helps if you have your head cocked slightly to the right, and of course the tip of your tongue hanging out just barely. :my2cents:

It was far too painful to try and read all the posts in this thread.

However, the OP was asking about detecting in Iron Infested areas.

As a new student of metal detecting I have tried to read all available, factual material I could locate and I think these articles may help. Even though they are quite dated, the technology remains basically the same.

I suggest reading them in this sequence and they may give you some ideas on how to approach your detecting situation.

Great articles by Dankowski. Take note that the 'bells and whistles' detectors perform best when they're set up to run like a single audio tone Tesoro with minimum discrimination. Tesoro detectors do great at unmasking good targets. Especially when the discrimination is set to a point where a nail is just on the edge of being discriminated out (cracking and popping). Bells and whistles such as multi-tone audio response ID, notch, back light and VDI numbers ain't a lot of help when it comes to unmasking good targets at trashy sites.

Thomas Dankowski -"95 percent of the good targets remain masked"

An affordable Tesoro Vaquero equipped with a 5.75 inch search coil can work wonders at unmasking good targets in the right hands. The key is using a small search coil, minimum discrimination on a detector that has a super fast recovery speed. The Racer 2 with the NEL Snake search coil and the F75 with the 5 inch search coil are also great choices for unmasking if you don't use all the bells and whistles and use it like a Tesoro.

I would concur...every mega totlot cladder quickly realizes this, a mixed multidenom fresh tight spill sounds like scrap....we see posts of mixed multidenom spills from the early days found every so often with scrappy signals...so yeah...
