Since the weatherman said today would be the last warm day in a while, I headed out on the mountain bike for a late-season ride, which took me to a dump area I'd hit last year. Armed only with a bottle probe bungee'd to the bike, I stabbed around the area again, this time finding some more milks, all half-pints, all dating in the 1920s: Lenick's LaPorte, Ind. (1926); South Gary Dairy, Gary, Ind. (1929); Murphy-Ward Dairy, Chicago (1927); J.D. Broxham, Chicago (1922); and Scholl Dairy, Michigan City, Ind. (1927) and a Watkins bottle.
Also uncovered was a 1934 Indiana license plate, the front portion of a 1920s Atwater-Kent radio (possibly Model 20c/21/32/33); and an old hulk of a 30s toy truck. The dump was scattered with old car parts also. Everything was probe-dug, as I had no digging tools with me (this started out as a bike ride!). All in all, a good day diggin' in the dirt.
Returned to the dump, to see if there was anything else to grab. No more milks, but uncovered a crapload of whiskey bottles (what boozers they were!), and more license plates, a 1933 Chevy hubcap, and lots of metal junk. I'm always shocked how the "good" bottles are usually broken but old light bulbs always survive being buried in dumps.
