Hey everyone, thought I’d share my two hunts from last weekend.
I went out on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday morning I revisited an old site (1850’s) that I had researched the week before and had done reasonably (got two English coins from the early 1900’s). There used to be market gardens and a few houses on this site. Only one house remains today. On the way to this site I spotted a few house sites (1930’s) where I got a few coins and some nice relics including a military button and badge. At the 1850’s site I got quite a few coins I had missed the week before. The soil is relatively sandy here so most coins come out in quite nice condition. I ended up finding a Chinese cash coin right next to the old driveway. Pretty cool coin. I’ve dated it to 1821-1850, making it one of the oldest coins I’ve found.
On Sunday I met up with a friends at an old townsite two hours east from where I live. Bit of a trek, but it was well worth it. We didn’t have much of a plan. We did have a few locations in mind, but as the day progressed we met a few locals who were happy to tell us where what was. At around midday one guy found a gold sovereign, we thought he was joking at first but when he showed it to us we couldn’t believe our eyes. He showed us where he found, so quite naturally we rushed over there and started gridding the place That’s where I found about half my old coins for the day. We later found out that was the site of the old bank, so that explained all the old coins.
No more sovereigns were found, but one kid found a 1923 halfpenny (only 15 000 made making it the rarest Australian halfpenny. Worth around $1000 in the condition his was in). Some of the coins I found included a 1917 shilling, 1952 florin, 1896 English sixpence and an 1875 penny.
Other interesting finds for Sunday included an old bottle, bottle stoppers and part of an ashtray (Guinness) from the pub. Thanks for looking and good luck out there!
