Hey all. I received this IH in a bag of Wheaties. It has a tar-like crust on it. To me, it looks to be from about 1875. I'm wondering what would be the gentlest way to clean it up, a bit. Its not of great value, but its worth enough to want to do it right. Any advice would be appreciated.

Gasoline or acetone should remove tar without scratching the coin...

Just my thoughts, maybe someone else might have a better suggestion..

I've also heard of folks freezing them a few times...

If it is tar the above advice is good, but it looks to me as if it has been in a fire, it also looks like it has a quite a bit of corrosion all over, it also looks like it has seen a few cleaning attemps what's left on it is no doubt very tough to get off.

Maybe in this case just use a tooth pick and pick off what you can.

If its toast , then you could try jelly

If its tar ....gasoline soak , rub with a tooth brush , soak again , brush again , repeat as necessary. There might be better options than gas , but gas should work. There is some tar remover stuff on the market , acetone , paint thinner...

I concur, Chris. After trying a few different methods, its toast, and goes in the sketchy IH bag. I'm still calling it an 1875. It was something to try, anyway. Too bad it didn't turn out to be an 1877.
