Looks like half of the latch off a military web belt.

I was thinking something along those lines, but it’s pretty robust for a belt. This site was a stage coach stop where I dug a lot of horseshoes. Possibly something equestrian?

I’m talking about the web utility belt, for carrying ammo, canteens, and such. I’ve still got one from my time in the service, and the latches on it are 2 3/4”.

Definitely....it’s the Vietnam era GI web belt clasp....I was just recently looking around for a replacement for my ww2 era belt I use for detecting (and is falling apart) and looked at the different clasps.
