Found this near a fallen-down 19th century house. Looks like the innards of some sort of valve to me, the threaded end appears to have been broken off, and the hole at the other end appears worn from a linkage attachment, or from someone sticking a rod thru it to turn the thing. Yes, shut off valve. Was a nut on the threaded part that held it in place. On or off type of valve.

Thanks. Seemed odd that it would be tapered like that, if it had much pressure it would tend to force it up out of the housing. Could it have been an on/off and pressure relief all in one?
 
No, just shut off valve. there would have been a spring under the nut to keep pressure down on the taper thus allowing for wear.

Okay, thanks. Makes perfect sense now. I wonder how old this one may be? Probably no way to tell without the housing.
