I am going with it's a copy. If someone a few hundred years ago went through the trouble to make a mold to cast coins instead of hammering them why would they make it in such an irregular shape. I think someone cast a mold of a real coin to make good copies to sell to unsuspecting buyers. Either way since it tested positive for gold it's a good find. This is just my opinion and what I know about old coins won't even fill a thimble.

I've never heard of any Spanish gold or silver being molded.......thought they were either hammered or milled? Dont know what milled is though. I just find the silly things. If its molded...Im gonna jump off the limb and say its fake. Looks hammered to me...cut it in half and see what the middle looks like. If the middle is as purty as the outside, well then shes worth a pretty penny!! Well maybe only half a

Why don't you call the number on the "New World Treasures" website and see if you can send them a photo of the coin to identify. Maybe they might have more experience than a jeweler.
The one thing I did observe about the coin in the cross didn't have T ends like the examples on the website. Unless you come up with an example with no T ends like yours, your piece might be a copy. However, the gold might be real and you still have the melt value of the gold. __________________ Last edited by joe4077; 05-06-2012 at 01:10 PM. Reason: correct spelling |

Post it here so some very knowledgeable cob guys can look at it.
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/spanish-cobs/ You're going to want better pictures of the front and back, and the edges, and the weight. __________________ |

Go to Discoversea shipwreck museum website. Go to the contact info and email them a pic. Try to contact Dale, he's the owner. He will know exactly what it is as soon as he lays eyes on it.. If they made 'em he's recovered them!! I think it's real Bro!
They are often different thicknesses. My 1 reale is paper thin on one edge and thicker on the other and its real as they come. You should do some backflips!! __________________ |

It looks wrong to me. Way too shiny looking. Most sea gold comes out a little duller...also would have coral bits stuck in tiny crevasses. I'll go on a limb and say it's a copy. If it's real gold it hasn't been in the sea very long based on the patina.

I've learned a bit after going through this with a find I made back in December which ended up being a copy and I have to say that it appears fake. If you did have a test done, then I hope it is real gold.
