CRH drying up

Of the approximately 3.7 billion silver halves minted, I wonder how long it will be until the supply dries up. I mean we have been sorting these things out of circulation for almost 50 years and I still find some when CRHing but it seems in my experience and from reading around the net, that some folks are dumping anywhere from 2k to 25k a week into CRHing halves and not finding very many. I see the whole silver halves going the way of quarters and dimes.

I was thinking of trying IKES but there just wasnt many made and the true silver ones were only in collector sets so I dont see many going into circulation. I wont even bother with 10s and 25s because it is just too hard to pull anything and the time and effort to unload them isnt very profitable even though silver spot is where its at currently. I also think the market is being flooded by anyone and everyone trying the CRH.

What do you all think? What trends do you see happening?

I tried the halves and stopped because i was getting nothing and they are a pain to put through the coin counter. Quarters are a rare find so I stopped doing them. Nickels are a pain as you have to check each coin.

I still get dimes each week and average about $0.80 to $1.00 face in every $1000.00 in dimes I search.

The ladies at my bank are also calling me when someone brings in rolls of coins. I have had some pretty good luck going through them!!

As for silver coins drying up, I have thought the same thing. But I do not know the process the coins go through before they are in my box of coins. Are you getting the silver from YOUR AREA and am I getting the silver from MY AREA?? It's hard to imagine that all the coins go to one central place in the country, mixed together, rolled and shipped back to banks in all areas.

As with MDing, someone in an area that has not been CRH'd to death is more likely to find a lot of silver than a person doing it where 100 other people are and have been for years! That and it only takes one old widow or some VERY stupid beneficiaries to dump a LOT odf silver coin back into the mix!!

I think the size of the area has something to do with it as well. In a larger city there may be more people CRH but you also have more people not realizing those 65-70 halves are 40% etc Smaller areas I would think you could burn it out. Aside from one bannk(a credit union) where I picked up 13 or 14k and never got a one, my longest skunk streak is 4k But I average around $350 melt value per 2k I pickup from the bank so to me it is worth it. This week will be the first I am doing 10k in halves, 2k a day from 5 banks. I drive within a mile or so of the banks I pickup and dump at everyday so for me it is no extra hasle other than lugging them out to my car and going through them but I can do 2k in about 2 hrs or so while watching TV

I CRH as well as metal detect and sell coins. The finds in my area CRH are thin, but I still occasionally find a few keepers. The dryness factor tends to be because of a number of factors. First has to do with the number of people CRH. Then how big is your city? Is it in an area that is highly traveled - people doing business, vacationing, etc? Are you in a densely populated fed district - such as the Northeast? Or are you in Kansas? How much do you hunt dollar wise? In some places the silver is still being found quite heavily.

I am in Tampa. A lot of vacationers in general in the whole area within an hour drive is who knows how many beaches plus Disney, ush Gardens, Universal etc. I have been doing 6k a week but now this will be my first week at 10k a week. I am a new MD so cant speak on it to much. I dont have a coin shop or anything, but I have opened a "I buy gold" place in a local indoor flea market and have been doing decent with it. My thoughts on it are to get my inital outlay of cash back for each metal purchase plus 10% and take any remaining in gold from ARA. Not in it to make money just free metal

I've only done CRH twice, after reading about it on this forum. The first time I bought 2 rolls of halves, 2 rolls of dimes, and 2 rolls of pennies. I found a silver dime in the first roll I opened up! Nothing of note in any of the other rolls. I was excited though becasue everyone says it is hard to get silver in a roll and I only bought 2 rolls of dimes and got 1 silver. So, I went back and bought 5 more rolls of dimes. All 2011 dimes  I now know I probably got lucky with the first roll of dimes. I still will probably try it again, heck, it doesn't cost anything. I would just do it for fun, a few rolls here and there.

My advice if that is your budget would be to buy $25 worth of pennies, sort out the pre 82's and return them to another bank, buy 20 bucks more worth of pennies do the same thing then return those etc until you have $25 face of copper pennies. This coud be done in a couple days. You can sell them for about 50 bucks on ebay. Reinvest those and repeat. Anyways build you up a bankroll to where you can search large quantities of dimes and halves. I have 2k I cycle through each day same 2k but I am able to search 10k a week of halves. I usually end up adding about 15-20 bucks back into my 2k for the face value of the silver I find and repeat daily. Searching small quantities of rolls will make it near impossible to find much

In my first attempt a CRH ing I bought $500 of halves and got skunked, did it again with $300 and found 4 in the sixties. Then spent another $500 and found 3 in the sixties. Then I realized from reading on here that I got pretty lucky doing it because it's not that common to find them. I haven't tried the half dollars since but I do get a $25 box of pennies every now and then and have gotten about 18 lbs of pre 82 pennies so far. I guess those will be the next to dry up.

The key to CRH is volume. Dimes, halves whatever. The more you go through the more you will have a chance to get. I wouldnt say you were lucky I would have been getting as many as you could get from the bank

forgot about all the old people who live here to

Ive seen your numbers on the other placeTN and you seem to be doing pretty well. I'm in vegas and I have heard that this town has and always will be a promising. I know there are quite a few of us here doing the CRH but I still get lucky...sometimes.

What denomination do you normally hunt :D ?

Halves, dimes, quarters...in that order but lately, just halves because it seems that there are alot of CRHers here and they are dumping everywhere...everywhere!

Did find a 40% by you at Wells (Chey/215)...that was a fluke though didnt buy any rolls there just getting smaller bills for lunch, saw it in the tray. Might have to go buy some rolls to see.

Have you checked around town at any of the casinos that still use halves? My wife and i were out there less than a year ago and cant remember which casino it was but from a Pai Gow table I got a 90%. (strip hotel) I bet some of the older casinos still even have some coin slots possibly.

That would probably be my budget as well if I am lucky. It would be nice to turn it into a nice chunk of money doing this.
I believe you mean sort out of the post 82s and take them to another bank since those are zinc. Probably simple typing error.
My only issue with selling off copper pennies on ebay. I don't have an selling account and it seems to be more of a hassle to deal on there. Are there any other places I could easily sell off rolls of copper pennies or any coins, perhaps here in classifieds?

As for now I'll probably try to just get into buying some halfs if I can. I had some from saving up on the side. Only had a 64 Half and the rest were from the 70s, 80s or 90s unfortunately.

I don't think the flow of silver halves will ever dry up.

Just because they are pulled from circulation doesn't mean they won't end up there again someday. I have a couple hundred silver halves that I have found and what would happen if I died, and my wife, not knowing better, took them to the bank and dumped them into the machine so she and her new boyfriend could run off to the Bahamas on vacation...
