That thing is huge, some sort of industrial or farming thing? It will end up being some sort of hinge pin latch hold slide shuffle sorter or something :lol::lol: I am sure someone will get it soon...

Thanks, I just started searching a new area, hope to spend the summers free time there and paint a picture of it's history find by find. This could put me off to a good start. It was 5" down

Having a closer look at the item, are those ball bearings at the end of the spigots, or load bearings? It would appear that this item sits inside another item which uses a pin to run along the groove, somewhat like a cam device.. for hydraulics..

But to do what? NO IDEA.. I'd seen a similar item on aircraft but smaller.. much smaller, same idea..

Curious to what it really was for..

I really don't know but one thing's for certain, it slid over and locked into place on a vertical or horizontal rotating shaft, as evidenced by the extensions in the hole fitting into grooves (keyways) on the shaft. It is somewhat heavy-duty. I tried googling drilling shaft mounting attachment but had no luck. Don't know.

Someone offered that it might be connected to something that was steam-driven or steam powered, like a train, tractor or a threshing machine, what does anyone think about that? I find it interesting that has the wire loop around through it so they could carry it, transport it, yes it is very heavy!

That is an interesting item. Looks like it went on an output shaft and whatever went around this piece changed directions every time the shaft rotated, something similar to a sickle mower gear box. Has it been determined that those are ball bearings ? I'm looking forward to finding out exactly what this is.

I don't think they are ball bearings, notice in the new pictures how there is a wide Gap under the end ball that gradually Narrows under each ball as they continue around the shaft

This is one of those really interesting ones! Looks like it's of railroad or factory origin. The graduating gaps has me thinking wire bending machine part? Maybe it's not the gaps that are important, but rather the various heights of the posts? Mounted on a shaft to partially rotate into engage/disengage position for whichever post is selected. This is just imaginative speculation, of course. Any markings on it?
Alternate function: small boat anchor

I'm leaning toward a rudder assembly shaft on some type of riverboat... a lot more research to do now, or maybe in the steering mechanism, any ideas I've been Googling it and found some similar movement in mechanics

It's part of barrel cam and follower, reciprocating to linear motion or index mechanism , the groove on the outside is where the follower rides, the arms are used to index something. What it was used for unknown, looks to be cast so it was used on a piece of machinery that was produced in quantity or a very expensive short run production.
