Hello all. I picked up a detector in December but have just been able to use it for the first time this past weekend, as the ground has been frozen solid. I found a 30-30 case with the headstamp “UMC 30-30 S”. I have researched UMC and Remington cases and can find no mention or info on what the significance of the “S” is. Some help for this beginner is appreciated!

I also found a rifle barrel, hexagon, looks .22 cal ish. It was a surface find in a sage field near an old mining camp. Rusted beyond recognition. I will post a picture after work. Maybe someone here can ID it also. Thanks, Jardine.

Beat me to it. Back in the day, 30-30 signified .30 caliber, 30 grains smokeless powder. It followed the old method of designating black powder cartridges, such as 45-70.

Thank you gentlemen. My google-fu usually finds this type of stuff, but it failed me this time. Thanks for the link Gauntlet.
